This arrived in my inbox yesterday. I don't usually do this but it's definitely worth sharing.
"Once upon a time, in a still relatively free country called America, the federal government located a vast scrap yard in the middle of a desert. Congress said, "Someone may steal from it at night." So a night watchman position was created and Congress hired a person for the job.
Then Congress in all it's wisdom said, "How can the watchman do his job without instruction?" [Congress is on the public dole and can never understand that normal Americans have common sense]. So they created a planning department and hired two people, one to write instructions, and one to perform efficiency/time studies.
Then Congress said, "How can we know the night watch-man is doing the tasks correctly?" So a Quality Control department was created and Congress hired and hired two people. One to do QC studies and one to write QC reports to be sent to Congress.
Then Congress said, "How will these people get paid?" Obviously they had to create two more positions: time keeper and payroll officer, then Congress hired two more people.
Then Congress said, "Who will be accountable for all of these people?" So they created an administrative section and hired three people, an Administrative Officer, Assistant Administrative Officer, and a Legal Secretary.
12 months later, Congress said, "We've had this command in operation for One Year and we are $918,000 over budget, we must cutback." So they laid off ... who else ... the night watchman.
NOW, think about that. Multiply this example by THOUSANDS to understand the true nature of the behemoth federal bureaucracy.
More to the point: does anybody remember the reason for the establishment of the DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY..... during the Carter Administration?
Bottom line: We've spent several hundred BILLION dollars in support of an agency....the reason for which not one person who reads this can remember! Ready? It was simple..and at the time, everybody thought it appropriate.
The Department of Energy, a cabinet-level agency, was instituted on 8/04/1977, TO DECREASE U.S. DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL. See info re: Jimmy Carter
Hey, pretty darned efficient, right? 33 years ago 30% of our oil consumption was from foreign imports. Today 70% of our oil consumption is from ... what else ... foreign imports." In 2009, the Department of Energy failed it's own energy audit. See WSJ article: Wall St. Journal

FAST FORWARD TO 2010 -- 33 YEARS LATER -- AND THE BUDGET FOR THIS "NECESSARY" DEPARTMENT IS AT $24.2 BILLION A YEAR WITH 16,000 FEDERAL EMPLOYEES AND APPROXIMATELY 100,000 CONTRACT EMPLOYEES.
AND LOOK AT WHAT AN INEPT FRAUD IT HAS BEEN, USING TAXPAYER DOLLARS. PRIVATE CITIZENS WHO PERPETRATE THIS KIND OF FRAUD ARE ROTTING IN JAIL.
What's worse is that now we have turned over America's banking system, health care system, and automobile industry TO THE SAME INEPT, FRAUDULENT FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.
There are millions of Americans who are awake, aware, and making sure Congress knows it. That rumbling noise they hear in Washington is the American people. We are coming for them.
All 535 members of Congress are on notice. We are evicting them; the first pink slips arrive November 3rd. The American people are taking out the trash.
